Vyavhar book: who gave what, and what to give back
Vyavhar (in Gujarati, vehvar) is the give-and-take between families. When they come to your function, you go to theirs, and the shagun you give back depends on what they gave. The vyavhar book is where that is remembered.
Why families keep a vyavhar book
Years later, when an invitation arrives, the first question is “what did they give at our wedding?” A vyavhar book answers it. It is the same register as the wedding’s shagun list, kept safe and looked up later.
What a good vyavhar record has
- The guest’s name and city or village, written clearly.
- The amount, or the gift given (and a note, such as “silver coin”).
- Which function it was given at, and the date.
Keeping it with Vehvar
During the wedding, family members write entries from their own phones into one register. Afterwards, search the register by name or city, and download it as Excel or a printable register sorted by surname, to keep with your family’s other vyavhar records.
